Hello and Welcome to Team Moore for the 2022 - 2023 CYBA Season!
As is common with these beginning of the year posts - this is long, but its full of important information, so please read through it and save for future reference.
My name is Josh Moore and I am the coach for your player’s team. This will be my 7th full year coaching in CYBA and I am excited to see what we can accomplish with this group of players!
To give you a bit of background on me - I am a Mizzou grad and live near Lange Middle School. I work as an attorney in the mid-Missouri area and my office is down in Jefferson City. I am on the CYBA Board of Directors and enjoy coaching. I coached my kid’s team for 6 years and have picked up other teams to coach throughout the years. My contact information is: 573-529-0151 (cell) and
(email). Its listed on the CYBA website as well. If you ever have a question, concern, or suggestion please do not hesitate to contact me.
Our first practice is Monday, November 14 at 6:00 p.m. at Battle Elementary School. Please let me know if your player will not be able to make this first practice. Our practices will be on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Battle Elementary. There’s a couple of practices later on where we will be at Oakland Middle School. We will have a short parent meeting following the first practice.
Please make sure that I am present when you go to drop your player off at practice. I try to get to practice about 20 minutes early. It is CYBA and CPS policy that a coach has to be there if a player is there. I won’t leave until everyone has been picked up. Also, we are guests at the CPS facilities so we ask that players stay in the gym or go directly to the bathrooms and not wander the halls or make messes.
Practice time will be split between conditioning, fundamentals, team offense and team defense. I plan on pushing the players both individually and as a team. What can you do to help? Make sure your player is on time and prepared to practice. This means that your player has a ball, is dressed appropriately, and has water. It also means giving them positive encouragement instead of negative criticism. To be clear – this does not mean that I will not correct problems or address issues with players. It just means I will do it in a certain way.
Every year there is a pre-season jamboree where the teams get to play 3 games (usually in day). The jamboree this year is scheduled for 12/10 and 12/11 and will be at the Columbia Sports Fieldhouse. We will have a couple of practices before the pre-season jamboree and it will be a great experience to see where we are at and what we need to work on. Please let me know if your player will not be available for the Jamboree.
Our games will typically be at the Columbia Sports Fieldhouse (4251 Philips Farm Road).
Just a quick explanation about CYBA and its policies. First and foremost, this is a recreational league and not a competitive league. What does this mean? That the focus for the season is teaching fundamentals, introducing the players to the game, and developing their teamwork. Do we want to win – of course, but it is not the priority. Positive encouragement from parents and fans is always welcome. Again, we’re here for fun and to learn how to play. Also, CYBA has strict rules about substitutions and how many minutes a player can play. Should there be any discretion left to me about playing time, I will be as fair and consistent as I can be throughout the season. If you have questions or concerns about this, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss.
What are my expectations for the team? I expect them to fully participate in practice and games, to pay attention, and to be respectful to their coaches, their teammates, the officials, and the other team. Sportsmanship is a key fundamental value in CYBA. Please keep in mind that players come to this team with a wide diversity of experience and ability. Some players come to this team with a good understanding of how basketball is played and for others this is their first experience with organized basketball. Coaching players on both ends of this spectrum (and in between) is great – as you get to see them develop and grow in different ways, but together as a team.
I am always open to parent feedback that is offered up in a polite and respectful manner. If you or your player have a concern about anything, please do not hesitate to reach out to me to discuss it. Please understand that there is a time and place for discussing these items. In the middle of a game or practice is most likely not one of them. Again, I always try to be available for a call or email if that works better.
If anyone wants to help with practices and/or games I am always happy to have the help. My kid will be helping me as their schedule allows.
So now we come to the end of the beginning of the season giant post.
Please do the following after reading this post - send me an email that:
- Lets me know if your Player will make the first practice (11/14).
- If there are any concerns about transportation or practice time/location.
- Whether your player will be able to make the Jamboree on 12/10-11.
- Finally, give me a little background information about your player, including any previous athletic experience and any important details I should know about your player.
Here’s to a great season! I can’t wait to meet each of you and your players on Monday 11/14 at 6:00 pm at Battle Elementary School.
