No practice tonight
by posted 11/23/2021

Hi everyone,

I wanted to remind you that there is no practice tonight.  CYBA did not schedule practices this week due to the holiday.  We will resume next Tuesday, November 30th, at 7 PM at Russell Blvd. Elementary.

If you have access to a ball and want to practice this week, here is a link to a short youtube video with a few dribbling drills.  Show this to your player and see if they can do the drill!

Also, if you want to see an overview of the Read and React offense we started learning last week, here is a short youtube video that explains the layer we are working on.  I encourage you to watch this with your player!

We will be working on this type of offense throughout the season, and it will take a while for it to becomes second nature.  This offense is a simplified version of motion offenses commonly seen at higher levels of play, and it stresses spacing, cutting to the basket without the ball, passing, layups, and rotating to maintain spacing.  The idea is to generate lots of easy scoring chances by creating continuous chances for a layup without having set plays.  Instead, the players have specific reactions they learn based on what the ball handler does.  Most importantly, this offense gets everyone involved and teaches valuable basketball IQ skills!

As always, let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.  Have a great Thanksgiving, and we will see you next Tuesday.

2nd practice notes
by posted 11/16/2021

Hi everyone,

I enjoyed meeting everyone at our first practice last Tuesday.   We have a fun group, and I look forward to seeing how we can grow as a team!  I am excited to see everyone at our 2nd practice this Tuesday at 7 PM at Russell Blvd. Elementary.  A couple of important notes:

1)The door is locked at the start of practice.

The door to the school is locked at 7 PM, and we cannot prop it open.  I will be letting people in from 6:45 – 7 PM, and I will try to have a parent watch for latecomers after practice starts if we are missing someone.  If you are running late, please call my cell phone (573-289-4820) so we can let you in.  Most importantly, if you are dropping off, do not leave until your child is let in.

2)Please bring water!

The water fountains are taped off due to the pandemic.  I am sorry for previously stating that we could access the water fountains.  Last practice we had kids drinking out of the bathroom sink, and we probably want to avoid that if possible.

3)Bring a ball if you have one.

If you have a ball, please bring one.  Some of the drills we practice require everyone to have a ball.

4)Masks - please wear a mask while inside Russell.

It is CPS policy that while indoors, visitors should be masked.  CYBA is a guest using CPS facilities, so we will abide by those rules.  According to CYBA, it is ok if kids and coaches are unmasked while practicing, but parents should remain masked.

5)Additional emails/contacts?

It occurred to me that when I send out practice-specific instructions, the parent handling basketball may not get the message. If another parent typically manages your child's basketball activities, please add that parent onto your account at the CYBA website.  You can add an additional guardian under the home pull down menu - it is the last option - edit my account.  Or, send me the other parent's email.  I will also pass out a sign-up sheet on Tuesday night if anyone wants to add their email to the list.

Please let me know if you have any questions via email or phone (573-289-4820).  Thanks for your support of the team!  See you tonight.

Coach Introduction
by posted 11/06/2021

Hello everyone,

My name is Matt Foulkes, and I have volunteered to serve as the coach for our CYBA 4th grade boys purple team. I am excited to meet everyone and work with our kids this season!

My goals for our team are to learn individual and team basketball skills, all while competing in a supportive atmosphere that stresses encouragement and sportsmanship. Most importantly, I want the kids to have fun!

You can access our schedule and other details here:  Here are a few additional details regarding our schedule, equipment, and coaching needs:

Our practices are at Russell Blvd. Elementary School on Tuesday evenings. We have five Tuesday evening practices from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in November and December, starting November 9th. There will be no practice on November 23rd, the week of Thanksgiving. In January, February, and the first Tuesday of March, our practice time will shift one hour earlier to 6:00-7:30 PM. During practice, we will work on the fundamental skills of dribbling, shooting, and passing. We will also practice team skills such as spacing, cutting, and screening. We will take plenty of breaks as we build up our endurance.

Pre-season Jamboree

The season kicks off with the CYBA Pre-season Jamboree, a three-game minimum tournament on the weekend of December 11th and 12th. CYBA has not set the specific schedule for this event yet, but I will let you know as soon as I learn more.

Games will be on Saturdays at Cedar Ridge Elementary starting in January, with the times are to be determined.

You will need to bring a ball to practice. We will be using a size 6, 28.5” basketball (one size below full size) in games. If you don’t have this size basketball, any basketball will do. I will bring three 28.5" balls to practice so that during team drills we are playing with the correct size. I suggest that you bring water to practice, though I believe we will have access to the drinking fountain.

Assistant coach – help wanted!

The league encourages coaches to find an assistant coach to help with practices and bench management during games.  We currently do not have one.  Please let me know if you are interested in serving as an assistant coach.

Practices - parent help encouraged!

While CYBA only allows two coaches on the bench during games, there is no limit to help during practices. I will often divide the kids into small groups for drills, and these are more effective if I can station a parent with each group. If you cannot commit to serving as an assistant coach but are interested in helping with some practices, I will gladly welcome the help!

Please let me know if you have any questions. During the next couple of months, feel free to contact me with any issues, concerns, or ideas.  I welcome your input!  Also, let me know if you want to volunteer to serve as the assistant coach.  I am excited to meet our team on Tuesday!
