My name is Matt Foulkes, and I have volunteered to serve as the coach for our CYBA 4th grade boys purple team. I am excited to meet everyone and work with our kids this season!
My goals for our team are to learn individual and team basketball skills, all while competing in a supportive atmosphere that stresses encouragement and sportsmanship. Most importantly, I want the kids to have fun!
You can access our schedule and other details here: http://www.cybahoops.org. Here are a few additional details regarding our schedule, equipment, and coaching needs:
Our practices are at Russell Blvd. Elementary School on Tuesday evenings. We have five Tuesday evening practices from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in November and December, starting November 9th. There will be no practice on November 23rd, the week of Thanksgiving. In January, February, and the first Tuesday of March, our practice time will shift one hour earlier to 6:00-7:30 PM. During practice, we will work on the fundamental skills of dribbling, shooting, and passing. We will also practice team skills such as spacing, cutting, and screening. We will take plenty of breaks as we build up our endurance.
The season kicks off with the CYBA Pre-season Jamboree, a three-game minimum tournament on the weekend of December 11th and 12th. CYBA has not set the specific schedule for this event yet, but I will let you know as soon as I learn more.
Games will be on Saturdays at Cedar Ridge Elementary starting in January, with the times are to be determined.
You will need to bring a ball to practice. We will be using a size 6, 28.5” basketball (one size below full size) in games. If you don’t have this size basketball, any basketball will do. I will bring three 28.5" balls to practice so that during team drills we are playing with the correct size. I suggest that you bring water to practice, though I believe we will have access to the drinking fountain.
Assistant coach – help wanted!
The league encourages coaches to find an assistant coach to help with practices and bench management during games. We currently do not have one. Please let me know if you are interested in serving as an assistant coach.
Practices - parent help encouraged!
While CYBA only allows two coaches on the bench during games, there is no limit to help during practices. I will often divide the kids into small groups for drills, and these are more effective if I can station a parent with each group. If you cannot commit to serving as an assistant coach but are interested in helping with some practices, I will gladly welcome the help!
Please let me know if you have any questions. During the next couple of months, feel free to contact me with any issues, concerns, or ideas. I welcome your input! Also, let me know if you want to volunteer to serve as the assistant coach. I am excited to meet our team on Tuesday!
